You type your business name on Google Maps. You type your trade followed by your commune (“plumber Esch-sur-Alzette”). Nothing. Not your listing, not your pin, not your name in the local pack.
It’s different from “my website doesn’t appear on Google” — Google classic search and Google Maps are two distinct indexes, with their own rules. You can well appear on Google Search without being visible on Maps, or vice versa.
This article diagnoses the 7 most frequent reasons why a Luxembourg business doesn’t appear on Google Maps. Each verifies in less than 2 minutes and resolves in a few days for the vast majority of cases. To go beyond diagnosis and progress on local ranking, see local SEO Luxembourg: dominate your city in 90 days and Google My Business: complete guide.
Check first
Before panicking, run three tests:
- Search the exact name of your business on Google Maps. If it appears with its exact name, you exist — the problem is elsewhere (ranking on trade queries).
- Search your trade + commune (“hairdresser Differdange”). Check if you appear in the top 20 results. Beyond, users don’t scroll — you’re invisible in practice.
- Log into Google Business Profile with the account that created the listing. If you see your listing, it exists. If you see nothing — that’s probably the first problem on this list.
These three tests immediately frame the diagnosis.
Listing never created
The most frequent and simplest case: your business simply doesn’t have a Google Business Profile listing. Many directors think having a website is enough — no, Google Business is a distinct system to create manually.
5-minute action: go to google.com/business (rel="noopener"), create an account with your pro email, add your business. Fill in exact name, primary category (as precise as possible) + 1-2 secondary categories, complete address OR service area if mobile (artisans, freelancers), professional phone number, website, precise hours.
Once submitted, Google will verify the physical existence of the business.
Listing created but not verified
You created the listing, but it doesn’t appear. The most likely reason: identity verification hasn’t been completed. Google only displays a listing after ownership is proven.
Verification methods: postcard (5-14 days at Luxembourg), phone (instant), email (rare), video (for some categories).
Without completed verification, the listing exists in your dashboard but stays invisible publicly. Check the status in your Google Business Profile.
Listing suspended by Google
Rarer but blocking case: Google has suspended your listing for suspicion of non-compliance. Typical reasons: fictional address or PO box presented as a physical office, non-compliant name (commercial names including keywords), multiple listings for the same business at the same address, non-compliant category, report by a competitor or user.
2-minute action: if your listing appeared before and disappeared, check Google Business Profile for a message from Google. Recovery procedure: fix the problem then request a new review via the reinstatement form. Delay: 7-14 days generally.
Duplicate with another listing
If someone (yourself, your predecessor, an employee, or Google by algorithm) created a listing for your address before you, you end up with two competing listings for the same business.
3-minute action: on Google Maps, search your exact address. See if other listings exist for the same business — possibly with a slightly different name (old commercial name, abbreviation). If yes, claim ownership of the old listing or ask Google to merge it with yours.
Wrong category
You exist on Google Maps, you’re verified, but you don’t appear on trade queries — only on your exact name. Often, this is a category problem.
Google compares your listing’s declared category with the query intent. If you’re categorised “Hardware store” while your customers search for you as “Plumber”, you don’t appear on their queries.
2-minute action: in Google Business Profile > Edit profile > Primary category, verify you chose the most precise category and closest to your commercial queries. Add 2-3 relevant secondary categories. Change takes effect within 24-72h.
Solenergie — Top 3 Local on their energy sector — notably worked categorisation strongly: precise primary category (“Solar energy company”) + secondary categories (installer, study, consulting).
Out of relevance zone
Google Maps has a concept of “relevance zone”: as distance between your location and the searcher’s position increases, your listing loses places in ranking. Beyond a certain distance, you no longer appear at all in the local pack.
Typical case: you’re at Esch-sur-Alzette, a customer searches “carpenter” from Wiltz. You’re potentially relevant (you travel), but Google by default favours carpenters physically at Wiltz or around.
Solutions: define a service area in Google Business Profile instead of a fixed address. Work localised content on your website — pages dedicated by commune with specific content. Build local authority: geolocated customer reviews, local partnerships, regional press.
Verify effect and act
Once cause identified and fixed, count 24h to 14 days to see the effect: phone or video verification (almost immediate), postcard verification (5-14 days), category change (24-72h), reinstatement after suspension (7-14 days after acceptance), duplicate merge (7-30 days).
Once the listing is visible, the optimisation mechanism (customer reviews, posts, photos, FAQ) takes over — pillar topic of Google My Business: complete guide.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Google take to verify my listing by mail (postcard) at Luxembourg?
Between 5 and 14 business days at Luxembourg, sometimes up to 21 days during peak request periods. If the mail doesn’t arrive, you can resubmit a request after 14 days in the Google Business Profile dashboard. Tip: verify exact address spelling — Google mail is very sensitive to address errors.
My business is registered on Google Maps but with a wrong address. How to correct?
Log into Google Business Profile, go to “Edit profile”, change the address. Google will probably ask for a new verification at the new address (postcard). During the verification period, the listing stays visible but may display with an “Address to verify” indicator on Maps.
I created two listings by mistake. What to do?
Log into the account holding the listing you want to delete. Go to “More” → “Close or delete profile” → “Delete profile”. For duplicate listings, Google also offers a merge via the “Request ownership” form. Avoid simply leaving two active listings: Google may suspend both as a precaution.
How many customer reviews to start ranking on Google Maps?
The exact number depends on local competition. On a less competitive sector at Differdange, 8-15 authentic reviews can suffice to reach the local pack. On a competitive sector at Luxembourg City, count 40-80 reviews to compete with market leaders. More important than number: regularity (1-2 new reviews per month) and rating diversity.
