Why Your Business Isn't Showing on Google Maps in Luxembourg

· Marcio Barros

You search for your business on Google Maps. Nothing. Or a client tells you over the phone: they can’t find you. When a business isn’t showing on Google Maps in Luxembourg, every local search ends at a competitor’s door — without you ever knowing it happened.

The good news: in the vast majority of cases, the cause can be identified and fixed within days. This article isn’t about ranking first — for that, read our guide on local SEO in Luxembourg. It deals with the problem that comes before: you’re not appearing at all. Here are the six most common causes, and how to check each one.

Check First: Are You Really Invisible?

Before hunting for the cause, confirm the symptom. Your own Google history skews your results — what you see is not what your clients see.

  • Search for your exact business name in Google Maps — not just in regular Google search.
  • Use a private browsing window, or someone else’s phone.
  • Test variations: with and without the legal form, with and without accents.

Two possible scenarios. If your profile appears when someone types your name, but never when someone searches for your trade (“electrician Esch-sur-Alzette”), you have a ranking problem, not an existence problem — that’s the subject of the local SEO article mentioned above. If you can’t be found on Google Maps even with your exact name, one of the following six causes is at play.

Cause 1: The Profile Was Never Created

This is the most mundane cause. Google sometimes creates profiles automatically from directories, but it’s far from systematic — especially for recent businesses or those without premises open to the public.

How to add your business to Google Maps: go to business.google.com, create a profile with your exact business name, choose a category, enter your address or service area, add your phone number. It’s free, and it takes about fifteen minutes.

Once the profile is created and verified, don’t stop there: our Google My Business guide for Luxembourg covers how to fill it in properly, section by section.

Cause 2: The Profile Exists but Was Never Verified

A profile that was created but never verified doesn’t appear publicly, or only in a very limited way. Google requires verification — most often a postcard with a code, sometimes a video or phone verification.

The classic blockers: the postcard never arrived, the business moved in the meantime, or the profile was created years ago with a Google account nobody kept access to.

The fix: log in at business.google.com, check your profile status, and restart the verification process if it was left hanging. Without this step, everything else is pointless.

Cause 3: Google Suspended Your Profile

“My Google listing disappeared”: visible for months, gone overnight. That’s almost always a suspension.

The most frequent triggers:

  • A profile name stuffed with keywords (“Dupont Plumber Emergency 24/7 Luxembourg”) instead of the real business name.
  • A virtual office or PO box address.
  • Changing your address and phone number at the same time.
  • A burst of edits in quick succession that triggers a re-verification.

Check the email address linked to the account: Google notifies you of the suspension and states the reason. Fix what’s wrong, then submit a reinstatement request through the official form. Above all, don’t create a second profile: you’d be adding a duplicate on top of a suspension, and both profiles would suffer.

Cause 4: A Duplicate Is Stealing Your Spot

Two profiles for the same business, and Google filters one out — sometimes the right one. Reviews get split between the two, signals get diluted, and neither displays properly.

Duplicates often come from an old address, a profile auto-generated by Google, or one created by a former employee. Search for your name with its variations and your old addresses. If you find a duplicate, claim it, then request a merge or removal through Google Business support.

Cause 5: The Wrong Category

Your profile exists, it’s verified, it shows up on your name — but never in trade searches. The likely culprit: your primary category.

Google matches searches to categories first. If your clients search for “electrician” and your primary category is “Construction company”, you’re invisible on the query that matters. Choose the most specific category possible, and add related activities as secondary categories — our Google My Business guide dedicates a full section to this.

Cause 6: You’re Outside the Relevance Zone

Google Maps ranks by proximity. A profile in Howald will rarely show for a search made in Ettelbruck — even if you work across the whole country. Luxembourg is small, but the algorithm thinks in radiuses, not borders.

What doesn’t work: creating fake addresses in other communes. That’s the shortest path to the suspension described above.

What works: honestly defining your service area on the profile, building a website that covers your real zones, and accumulating reviews and reputation. That’s the groundwork we did for Solenergie, a photovoltaic panel installer: a consistent profile, an aligned website, and a Top 3 Google position on their target local queries.

How We Work at Slash.lu

We diagnose the profile and the website together, because Google cross-references both constantly. A perfect profile linked to an inconsistent website — or the other way round — isn’t enough. In our web projects, local visibility isn’t an option: it’s part of the foundations.
